Frost guard

Frost guard

June, July & August is usually the quiet times in the garden as the winter sets in. Pruning and cutting back is not recommended until late July or early August.

Trees and shrubs need their leaves and extra foliage to protect them from extreme cold and frost.

Frost Guard your frost sensitive plants in May

Frost kills plants by forming ice within the cell structure; this robs them of moisture and can “crack” the cell. A comparison is like a frozen water-pipe bursting. If too many cells are damaged the plant cannot absorb moisture and will die. But as a lot of trees, shrubs and grass (kikuyu) have a dormancy period during winter they grow slower and need less moisture.

Most trees and shrubs indigenous to South Africa are frost resistant and many perennials will survive the most severe frost. But to be on the safe side you can use frost guard or hessian material which can protect tropical, young or fragile plants.

May to Mid-October is usually when the frost can hit in the central parts of South Africa. If frost guard or hessian is used to protect young or fragile plants there must be enough air and light around the plant.

Too little light or air will cause plant diseases. The cover can be removed during the day as usually afternoons are warm and the plant can be covered again at night. All this effort will reap huge rewards as your plants hit by frost under cover will be least affected.
