Au pair

The word "Au Pair" is a French term, which means "on par" or "equal to", denoting living on an equal basis in a reciprocal, caring relationship between the host family and the children. An au pair will typically be a young woman and sometimes a young man from a foreign country who chooses to help look after the children of a host family and provide light housekeeping. The au pair is given room and board and is typically paid a weekly "pocket-money" salary. Au pairs generally stay with their host family for one year.

An au pair in South Africa is a professional, responsible, experienced and even trained person who cares for the child’s entire welfare whilst in his or her care and is not responsible for any general household duties. An au pair in South Africa is the equivalent of a Professional Nanny in the UK.

Au pairs are expected to do more than just supervise the children in their care. While parents are always a child's primary care providers and role models, it is an au pairs job to support the parents by contributing to the children’s vital support network and assisting the parents to ensure that their children become well adjusted, happy, positive members of society. An au pair helps with the daily activities related to the child’s needs, from lifting to helping with homework, preparing healthy snacks and filling the children´s days with fun, age appropriate activities. This leaves time for mom and dad to relax with their children and enjoy a healthy relationship which ultimately will provide the basis to develop the communication and trust needed between children and parents as they get older.

The following rates are a guideline to the current market related rates and may vary according to your requirements, the hours required and the number and age of children. For many candidates this is the only income they earn and therefore the fewer hours required, the higher the rate will be.

R 95 to R 110 per hour

Travel costs are paid over and above the above rates and may vary between R4 to R6 per km travelled by the au pair, to and from your home if not living in and during the day dropping and fetching your child/children from school or on shopping errands for the family.
